West End LIVE 2026: Free London Musicals in Trafalgar Square — Everything You Need to Know
Every June, something happens to Trafalgar Square that no other city on earth can quite produce. The usual tourist traffic thins out, a proper stage appears in front of the National Gallery, and — completely free of charge — the casts of fifty West End musicals walk out to perform for whoever turns up. No ticket. No ballot. Just show up.
If you are in London on 20 or 21 June and you have the London Tourist Pass sorted, the timing works perfectly: front-load the city's paid attractions in the morning and let the afternoon's free theatre happen around you in one of the world's great public squares.
West End LIVE 2026 is presented by Westminster City Council and Official London Theatre. Called "Glastonbury for theatre lovers" by the press, it draws tens of thousands of people across the weekend with fifty-plus performances and not a ticket required for general admission.
What Is West End LIVE?
West End LIVE is Europe's largest free musical theatre festival. Performances run across two days in Trafalgar Square, with the 2026 schedule running Saturday 11am to 5pm and Sunday 12pm to 4pm. Each slot gives audiences a condensed 10–15 minute excerpt from a West End production, performed live by the actual cast — many of them dashing over between their afternoon matinee and evening performance commitments. You feel those logistics working in real time: performers arriving in costume through the crowd, crew running cables across the square, and a full orchestra playing against the backdrop of 18th-century government buildings.
No advance booking for general admission. No charge. Turn up, find a spot, and watch. Arriving early gives you the better sightlines; arriving later still means you hear everything clearly and can see the stage on the screens.
For wheelchair users and visitors with other accessibility needs, there is a dedicated viewing area on the North Terrace with BSL interpretation throughout. This section was ticketed via ballot (now closed for 2026). If you have accessibility requirements, contact Official London Theatre directly.
Can't attend in person? Official London Theatre streams performances throughout the weekend via their YouTube channel and social media.
The 2026 Line-Up
Over 50 performances are confirmed across both days.
Saturday 20 June opens with Disney's Hercules at 11am — currently in its final months in London and one of the most talked-about shows of the year. The Saturday line-up includes Hamilton, Wicked, Les Misérables, The Phantom of the Opera, Cabaret, Moulin Rouge! The Musical, Six, and Hadestown. Saturday's presenters are Mathilde Barker (first-ever TikTok Backstage Reporter for Britain's Got Talent 2026), Shanay Holmes, and Tobias Turley (winner of ITV's Mamma Mia! I Have a Dream and currently playing Sky in the West End production).
Sunday 21 June opens with Disney's The Lion King at 12pm, continuing the tradition of The Lion King kicking off the Sunday session. The confirmed Sunday line-up includes Beetlejuice The Musical — currently in the West End and performing free at Trafalgar Square on 21 June — Mamma Mia!, Matilda The Musical, Paddington The Musical, The Book of Mormon, Hadestown, Moulin Rouge! The Musical, Oliver!, and Operation Mincemeat. Sunday is presented by Courtney Bowman and Tosh Wanogho-Maud, currently starring together in Kinky Boots at the London Coliseum.
Confirmed across both days: Heathers: The Musical, Jersey Boys, Into the Woods, Jane Eyre, Grease: The Immersive Movie Musical, The Karate Kid – The Musical, Dark of the Moon, English National Opera, Sirens: The Concert Series, Love Never Dies in Concert, Liberace and Liza: A Tribute, and Noël Coward in the West End. Additional surprise performances are announced live on both days.
High School Musical is previewing at West End LIVE 2026 ahead of its October West End opening — making Trafalgar Square on 20–21 June the earliest public chance to see the new London production before the critics arrive and tickets go on general sale.

Where to Find the Stage
The main stage is at the northern end of Trafalgar Square in front of the National Gallery.
By Tube: Charing Cross (Bakerloo and Northern lines) is 92 metres away. Leicester Square (Piccadilly and Northern lines) is 355 metres. Embankment (District, Circle, Bakerloo, Northern) is around 400 metres.
Overflow viewing: If the square reaches capacity, Victoria Embankment Gardens has a free big screen streaming the performances live, beside Embankment station.
Food: The Flavours & Makers Market at Strand Aldwych runs on both days with international street food stalls — a short walk from the square and a good option for lunch between performances.
Note: the additional overflow area on Pall Mall East is back for 2026 but has no screen or livestream this year. It offers a restricted partial view of the stage — fine for the atmosphere, less so for the actual show.
Practical Tips
Arrive before the headline acts. The square fills quickly, and there are no reserved spots in general admission. For Hamilton on Saturday — be at the square by 10:30am. For The Lion King on Sunday — 11:30am at the latest.
No cloakrooms or bag storage on-site. Bring a folding picnic blanket, water bottle, portable phone charger, and sunscreen.
The sound system carries well across the whole square. If you are further back, you will still hear the performance clearly, and screens around the stage show close-up footage throughout.
Travelling with children? West End LIVE is one of the best free family days in London. Slots are short enough for younger attention spans, and The Lion King, Paddington, Matilda, and Mamma Mia! work well across all ages. Bring snacks, stay flexible.
For 2026, 100 fast-track entry places per day were available via online competition (closing date 14 June — now passed). Check officiallondontheatre.com for any remaining access opportunities.
Making a Full Weekend of It: Your London Tourist Pass Plan
West End LIVE is an afternoon event. That leaves every morning free for the city's paid attractions, and the London Tourist Pass BYOP (Build Your Own Pass) is the right tool for this kind of weekend. You choose only the attractions you want, with savings compounding as you add more — most visitors hitting five London attractions save 40–45% against walk-up prices.
Saturday 20 June
Begin at the Tower of London at 9am. Walk-up adult tickets are approximately £34–36; the Tower is includable in your London Tourist Pass BYOP. Join the Beefeater tour (free with entry, every 30 minutes), spend time with the Crown Jewels, and be out by 11am. Tower Bridge is five minutes on foot from the Tower's main gate — add it to your BYOP for a combined East London saving that beats buying each separately.
Head to Trafalgar Square to catch Disney's Hercules opening the festival at 11am. Lunch at the Flavours & Makers Market on Strand Aldwych. Stay for the Saturday afternoon line-up — Hamilton, Wicked, and Les Misérables each take the stage through the afternoon. Festival wraps at 5pm.
Sunday 21 June
Westminster Abbey from 9am. Walk-up adult tickets are approximately £28–31; includable in your London Tourist Pass BYOP. Book a timed entry slot in advance — without pre-booking, queues stretch to 45 minutes on busy Sunday mornings.
After Westminster, the London Eye. Thirty minutes in a capsule, 135 metres above the Thames. Add to your BYOP for 20–25% off walk-up. A ten-minute walk from the South Bank gets you to Trafalgar Square for The Lion King at noon.
The afternoon line-up — Beetlejuice, Mamma Mia!, Matilda, Paddington — runs until 4pm. From there, the rest of Central London is yours.
| Day | Morning (London Tourist Pass) | Afternoon (Free) |
|---|---|---|
| Saturday 20 June | Tower of London + Tower Bridge | West End LIVE from 11am, Strand Aldwych Market for lunch |

Prices verified as of June 2026. Always confirm at official attraction websites.
Eating Around Trafalgar Square This Weekend
Strand Aldwych Flavours & Makers Market (both days) — the easiest lunch option. International street food, right there.
Dishoom Covent Garden (12 Upper St Martin's Lane, WC2H 9FB) — ten minutes on foot. The black dal and bacon naan are worth a small queue. Book ahead for dinner; lunch often walks in.
Café in the Crypt, St Martin-in-the-Fields (Trafalgar Square, WC2N 4JJ) — directly at the square, under the church. Good soup, honest prices. Locals know about it.
Wahaca Covent Garden (66 Chandos Place, WC2N 4HG) — generous Mexican street food at fair prices. Good for groups.
For post-festival dinner on either evening, the Lamb & Flag on Rose Street (WC2E 9EB), just off Garrick Street, is one of Covent Garden's oldest pubs. Takes a minute to find. Worth finding.
Should You Book a West End Show Alongside West End LIVE?
Yes, if the schedule allows. West End LIVE gives you 12 minutes of Hamilton and leaves you wanting the full two hours and 45. The Official London Theatre Ticket Booth in Leicester Square offers day-seats and last-minute deals from 10am on the morning of the show — some productions have £25–30 day-seat options available in person. A free Trafalgar Square afternoon followed by an evening show is one of the better London theatre days you can put together.
