Bentota is around 65 km south of Colombo, making it one of the most accessible beach escapes on the island. The quickest and most comfortable option is a private taxi from the city, which takes roughly 1 hour 15 minutes via the A2 coastal highway. You can also take the scenic train from Colombo Fort Station directly to Bentota station, which runs twice daily and takes about 1 hour 20 minutes. The train route hugs the coast the entire way and is genuinely one of the more beautiful rail journeys in Sri Lanka.

Bandaranaike International Airport sits about 107 km north of Bentota. A private taxi is the most straightforward option and takes roughly 1 hour 40 minutes depending on traffic. There is no direct train from the airport; you would need to first travel into Colombo and then board a southbound service from Fort Station. For most travellers, especially those arriving with luggage, a pre-booked taxi transfer direct to Bentota is the most practical choice.

Bentota and Beruwala are neighbouring coastal stretches, each with a distinct character. Bentota Beach is a long, soft-sanded bay well suited to swimming and water sports, fronted by a cluster of resort hotels. Beruwala Beach, a few kilometres north, is known for its coral reefs, making it the better choice for snorkelling. Beruwala also has strong connections to the Arab spice trade and is home to one of the oldest mosques in Sri Lanka, the Kechimalai Mosque on Barberyn Island, adding a layer of cultural interest alongside the beach.

The Bentota River Safari is one of the most popular activities in the area, taking visitors through mangrove tunnels, past fish farms, and across to Cinnamon Island where cinnamon has been cultivated for centuries.

The best time to visit Bentota is between November and April, when the southwest coast of Sri Lanka enjoys dry, sunny weather with temperatures between 27°C and 31°C. December through March is peak season and sees the most visitors, particularly around the Christmas and New Year period. If you prefer quieter beaches and lower accommodation rates, the shoulder months of October to November and April can work well. Avoid May to September if water sports are a priority, as the southwest monsoon brings rough seas and most operators suspend activities during this period.

Bentota pairs well with both Galle and Colombo, sitting roughly midway between them along the coastal highway.
