Colombo has more going for it than most traveler's expect. The Gangaramaya Temple is a must, with its eclectic mix of Sri Lankan, Thai, and Chinese architecture and a fascinating museum inside. Galle Face Green is the city's beloved seafront promenade, perfect for a sunset stroll with street food in hand. The Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque in Pettah, with its striking red and white candy-striped facade, is one of the most photographed spots in the city. Round it off with a walk through the colonial Fort district.

If it's your first trip, stick to the Fort and Pettah neighborhoods to get a real feel for the city. The National Museum of Colombo is a brilliant starting point for understanding Sri Lanka's history, from ancient kingdoms to the colonial era. Independence Square and Vihara Mahadevi Park offer a quieter, greener side of the city.

Beyond the main tourist spots, Colombo rewards curious traveler's. The Pettah Floating Market, built along the city's canal system, is a lively and photogenic spot with 92 stalls selling everything from spices to handmade goods. The Seema Malakaya Meditation Centre, sitting on Beira Lake and accessible via a small bridge, is one of the most peaceful spots in the city.

Colombo is a city best explored on foot and by tuk-tuk. Start your morning at the Gangaramaya Temple, then walk along Galle Face Green before heading into the Pettah market for local street food. Colombo is Sri Lanka's commercial capital and its most cosmopolitan city, sitting along the south-west coast of the island. It's often the first port of call for traveler's arriving in Sri Lanka, and it more than justifies a couple of days of its own. The city's international airport, Bandaranaike International Airport, is located about 32km north of the city center in Negombo.

Colombo is at its best between November and April, when the weather is dry, sunny, and relatively cool. December to February is peak season, with temperatures averaging around 27°C and very little rainfall. January is particularly lively, with the Durthu Perahera festival drawing large crowds in the Kelaniya district. If you prefer fewer tourists, the shoulder months of November and March offer similar weather with a quieter atmosphere across the city's sightseeing places.

Most traveler's rush through Colombo to reach the beaches and highlands, but the city genuinely rewards those who slow down. The range of things to do in Colombo, from temple visits and colonial architecture to street food and gem museums, makes it a compelling destination in its own right. A two to three day stay gives you enough time to cover the main tourist spots and still catch a tuk-tuk to the coast. Colombo also has excellent transport links, making it a convenient base for day trips to Negombo, Kandy, and the hill country.

Sri Lankan food is the main event. Kottu roti, where chopped flatbread is stir-fried with vegetables, egg, and curry, is Colombo's most beloved street dish and best tried at a local spot like Pilawoos. Hoppers, thin crispy bowl-shaped pancakes served with coconut sambal, are perfect for breakfast. The Pettah market area and Aluthkade Street Food Market are great places to eat like a local after dark. For something more refined, Colombo's colonial-era hotels serve excellent high teas and seafood menus.

Kandy, the cultural capital of Sri Lanka, is about three hours by train and is home to the Temple of the Tooth and a beautiful lake. Galle, a UNESCO-listed colonial fort town, is around two hours south along the coast road.
