Hue is Vietnam's former imperial capital and the only city in the country that served as a seat of power for the Nguyen Dynasty, which ruled from 1802 to 1945. Hue is well connected from both ends of Vietnam. From Da Nang, Hue is about two hours by road or train, passing the dramatic Hai Van Pass, which many travelers choose to ride by motorbike for the views alone.

The royal tombs are located on hills south of the city and served as the emperors' resting places, each designed during their lifetime. The tombs of Minh Mang, Tu Duc, and Khai Dinh are the most visited, each with its own character: Minh Mang is grand and symmetrical, Khai Dinh is unusually Gothic in style, and Tu Duc is set within pine forests and ponds. Hue in central Vietnam has a distinct climate pattern compared to the north and south. The dry season runs from January to August, with February to April considered the most comfortable months for sightseeing. Hue's famous Hue Festival, an international arts event, takes place in even-numbered years and draws performers and cultural events to historic sites. Avoid visiting between September and December, if possible, as this is typhoon season, and the city is prone to significant flooding that can affect transport and access to attractions.

Two full days is the practical minimum to cover two or three royal tombs, and an evening along the Perfume River.
