Absolutely fascinating and truly one of the most unique places to visit in Istanbul. The Basilica Cistern, built in the 6th century during the reign of Byzantine Emperor Justinian I, is an incredible underground structure with hundreds of ancient columns and beautiful reflections on the water. I had never seen anything quite like it and was amazed by the atmosphere and history. I couldn’t purchase tickets online through the official website, so I had to buy them on site and wait about 20 minutes to enter. The foreign visitor price was also quite high—almost $100 for two people. Still, this is a one-of-a-kind experience and definitely worth visiting. Highly recommended if you’re in Istanbul! 🇹🇷✨

The Basilica Cistern is one of the most fascinating places to visit in Istanbul. Walking through the ancient underground chambers, surrounded by towering columns and softly lit reflections on the water, feels like stepping back in time. The atmosphere is peaceful, mysterious, and unlike anywhere else in the city. The Medusa head columns are especially impressive and add to the site's unique history. It's well maintained, easy to explore, and definitely worth a visit if you're interested in history, architecture, or simply looking for a memorable experience. Highly recommended! The tickets are not cheap, but definitely worth it for me. We also use skip the line option for an extra 10€ per person. It was available right in front of the entrance.

The Basilica Cistern was one of the most magical and unforgettable places I visited in Istanbul. From the moment you walk down the stairs, you're greeted by a breathtaking underground world filled with towering ancient columns, beautifully illuminated walkways, and the calming sound of water. The atmosphere is unlike anywhere else in the city. The lighting and reflections on the water create a mysterious yet peaceful ambience, making the entire experience feel almost surreal. Every corner of the cistern is incredibly photogenic, and it's easy to spend time simply admiring the architecture and taking in the history surrounding you. One of the highlights was seeing the famous Medusa head columns, which add another layer of mystery and intrigue to the visit. Learning about the history of the cistern and how it supplied water to the Byzantine Empire made the experience even more fascinating. Despite being one of Istanbul's most popular attractions, the visit felt well organized and was absolutely worth it. It's a place where history, architecture, and atmosphere come together perfectly. Students do get a discount. I highly recommend visiting the Basilica Cistern. It's one of those landmarks that truly lives up to the hype and is an absolute must-see for anyone visiting Istanbul.

Visiting the Basilica Cistern was one of the most atmospheric experiences I had in Istanbul. As I walked down into the underground chamber, the temperature, dim lighting, towering columns and sound of dripping water created a completely different atmosphere from the busy streets above. Built during the reign of Byzantine Emperor Justinian I in the 6th century, the cistern was designed to store water for Constantinople. Its enormous underground hall contains 336 marble columns, many of them reused from earlier Roman structures. What fascinated me most was realizing that I was standing inside a huge piece of Byzantine infrastructure hidden beneath modern Istanbul. The famous Medusa heads at the base of two columns were another detail I kept coming back to—they add an intriguing layer of mystery to the site. Walking between the columns and seeing their reflections in the shallow water was an unforgettable part of my visit. Personal tip: Take your time and look at the columns from different angles. The atmosphere changes dramatically as you move through the cistern, and the Medusa heads are easy to miss if you're rushing.
