Housed within the magnificent, sunlit 17th-century Hôtel Salé in the heart of the historic Marais district, the Musée Picasso offers the world's most comprehensive and intimate exploration of Pablo Picasso’s artistic genius. The baroque mansion provides a striking backdrop for an astonishingly vast collection that spans every period of the master's career, showcasing not only his revolutionary paintings and sculptures across cubism and surrealism, but also his personal collection of African art and ceramics. Wandering through these elegant salons allows visitors to trace the restless, endlessly inventive mind of an artist who fundamentally reshaped modern visual culture.

The iconic Picasso Museum did not disappoint. Located in a beautiful hotel particulier, the museum covers all periods of Picasso's long artistic life including sculptures and pottery. The historic building has been very tastefully adapted for use as a museum. I also enjoyed the current exhibition on Henry Taylor (born 1958) whose take on Picasso's famous Demoiselles d'Avignon is included in the exhibition. The museum also currently features a virtual reality presentation on Picasso's Guernica. Besides Picasso the permanent collection also includes some nice artworks by Matisse and Modigliani.

Musée Picasso is one of the most interesting art museums in Paris, especially if you want to understand Picasso’s development across different periods and styles. The collection is extensive but still manageable to see in a few hours, and the museum is organized in a way that lets visitors follow both the artistic evolution and parts of Picasso’s personal life. The museum includes paintings, sculptures, sketches, ceramics, photographs, and archival material, so the visit feels broader than a standard painting museum. For me, the most remarkable works are the portraits of people Picasso loved. They make the museum feel personal and human, not only historically important. Across very different artistic styles, the emotional connection to family, friends, and companions remains visible and gives many works unusual warmth and intensity. The building itself, a historic mansion in the Marais, also adds a lot to the experience. The atmosphere is calmer than in some of the largest Paris museums, and the rooftop terrace café is pleasant in good weather with nice views over Paris rooftops. 🎨🇫🇷

Excellent experience and able to see everything in about 2 hours. If you want to watch all the films shown, it may take longer. Bilingual throughout the museum. Audio guide available (but I was not offered this so not sure if that is in English language). Covers Pablo Picasso's art progression from his youth through to his death. Special attention given to the WWII period. If you go in order, the dark mood from the war lifts when Picasso moves to Southern France and learns ceramics. The museum claims to contends overtly with contemporary concerns about his othering/objectifying/co-opting behaviors. See the website for programs and info on how they do that. The Henry Young special exhibit was running concurrently while I visited - featuring impressive enormous politically engaged and important work. Note* there is a place to check your bag/coat downstairs.

A quaint museum for any Picasso or general art enthusiast. Apparently it has the richest public collection of Picasso works in the world. It showcases not only many of his paintings but also many of his sculptures. Worth the visit if you're in Paris and are overwhelmed by the Louvre like I was. 🤭
