Salisbury Cathedral is absolutely extraordinary and, in my opinion, one of the true must-see historic sites in England. The cathedral itself is breathtaking. The scale, architecture, craftsmanship, and atmosphere are almost overwhelming when you first walk inside. It is one of those places where photographs simply cannot capture what it feels like to stand there in person. Then there is the Magna Carta. Seeing an original surviving copy of one of the foundational documents of Western democracy was genuinely incredible. Its influence on the rule of law, individual rights, constitutional government, and later democratic traditions cannot be overstated. Standing only a few feet away from something that helped shape the political and legal foundations of the modern Western world was surreal. Even without the Magna Carta, Salisbury Cathedral would be worth visiting. With it, the cathedral becomes borderline unmissable. The staff were also welcoming, knowledgeable, and clearly passionate about preserving and sharing the cathedral’s history. Between the magnificent building, the remarkable atmosphere, and the opportunity to see the Magna Carta, this was one of the most memorable stops of our entire trip. If you are anywhere near Salisbury, do not skip it.

The cathedral and history at the cathedral was excellent. It is very well kept and has a few good exhibits. The oldest functional mechanical clock is there. They also have a detailed explanation of the development of the church. We were very surprised to discover that the Magna Carta best copy is present at this location. If you’re in the area, this is a must stop place.

Salisbury Cathedral is one of the finest in the United Kingdom, with the tallest spire, standing at a height of over 400 feet, and the largest Cathedral Close amongst its exceptional features. The magnificent architecture is immediately impressive on approach, with the ornately carved stonework revealing a wealth of detail up close. Inside, the building is just as impactful, with soaring Gothic arches, vaulted ceilings and imposing proportions. There are a host of notable features inside, amongst the most remarkable of which are the world's oldest functioning mechanical clock, dating back to the late 14th century, the exquisite modern font designed by sculptor William Pye, and the best preserved original 1215 Magna Carta to survive today, on display in the Chapter House. It's worth booking tickets at least a day before online to benefit from a discounted price, £12.50 at the time of my visit in May 2026, representing good value for such an exceptional place. Onsite facilities include a gift shop and café. Parking is available within the Cathedral Close for a charge of £10 for the day, allowing you plenty of time to fully explore the cathedral and its surroundings. There aren't many spaces so arrive early to park nearby. Dogs on leads are allowed in the cathedral. Check the website for opening hours before visiting as they can vary with events. Salisbury Cathedral is well worth travelling to visit, and the city itself is similarly appealing, with a high concentration of attractive historic buildings, and notable heritage sites including Old Sarum and Stonehenge nearby.

Whether you're religious or not, this is a must do when visiting Salisbury. Constructed in the mid 13th century, this impressive cathedral is loaded with history and wonderful architecture. It is home to Brittan's oldest working mechanical clock and the best preserved original copy (of four) of the 1215 Magna Carta (foundational royal charter). We also enjoyed the free tour and lovely grounds. There is a cafe and toilets on site. Tickets are a little cheaper to buy online.

Visited the cathedral today. The cathedral has the tallest spire in Britain, one of the preserved Magna Carta manuscripts and the world’s oldest working mechanical clock. There are guides in the church who offer free tour of the church. If you have enough time you can book the tour of the tower. It’s a beautiful place to visit.
