Şerefiye Cistern is one of Istanbul’s most impressive underground Byzantine cisterns and, in my opinion, one of the nicest ones to visit after the Basilica Cistern. It was built in the 5th century, during the reign of Emperor Theodosius II, to store and supply water to Constantinople. What makes it special is the atmosphere inside. You walk down underground into a huge space filled with beautifully preserved marble columns, arches and soft lighting. The columns were made from different types of marble, and many have decorative capitals that are still surprisingly detailed after all these centuries. The cistern was restored and reopened as a cultural venue, and today you can also see light and sound installations and occasional cultural events inside. The modern lighting works really well with the ancient architecture and gives the whole place a slightly magical feeling. Unfortunately, when I visited there was no light show. It’s smaller than the Basilica Cistern, so you won’t need as much time. It feels calmer and less overwhelming, and you can take your time looking at the details. Definitely worth visiting if you’re exploring the old city, especially because it gives you another completely different look at Byzantine Istanbul. The only downside really is that it is quite expensive for what is on offer. You pay about 950 TL and your visit could last no more than 10 minutes.

This is truly a hidden gem in the heart of Fatih, and provides the exact experience at a fraction of the price you pay at Basilica Cistern. This cistern is considerably small as compared to Basilica Cistern, however it provides the exact same experience with a lot less crowds. This cistern has been well maintained, an elevator has been installed that ensures accessibility for all visitors, while there is a long but secure straight staircase to go down. Buying tickets is super easy through the automated kiosk with two ticket dispensing machines that are smart screens and accept payment through Card and Contactless modes. The cistern also has an active arts display, where lot of contemporary art pieces are installed inside the cistern as well as outside. A lot of other arts and culture related events take place at the complex as well. The laser show however has been discontinued of late. The atmosphere is really cool inside the cistern. The lack of excessive tourists gives this place a real edge, and would highly recommend a visit to this place.

This was a pleasant visit, it was a very hot day when we visited (33°C) and it was lovely and cool inside. They have loud music with light shows, which comes on every hour. To me, the Basilica Cistern is more beautiful. This cistern is a lot smaller than the Basilica and I preferred the soothing music and calm atmosphere in the Basilica cistern.

Such an underrated gem in Istanbul! While everyone queues for the Basilica Cistern, this one is much more peaceful and just as impressive. The 3D mapping light show is absolutely spectacular—it really brings the history of the city to life in a unique way. The restoration is top-notch, with glass floors and a very modern feel that contrasts beautifully with the ancient columns. It’s smaller than the other cisterns but the atmosphere is intimate and the acoustics are incredible. Definitely worth a visit if you want to skip the massive crowds and see something truly special. 10/10 experience!

Absolutely incredible that they charge €20 to see a very small place without any written or audio guide. It is basically an ancient water tank and with minimal maintenance. Please do yourself a favor and DON'T EVEN CONSIDER TO VISIT IT
