Dharamshala is the home of the 14th Dalai Lama and the Tibetan Government-in-Exile, making it India's most politically significant hill station. McLeod Ganj is the upper township of Dharamshala, 10 kilometres from lower Dharamshala at 1,457 metres. It has been the home of the Tibetan Government-in-Exile since 1960, when the 14th Dalai Lama established his seat here after fleeing Tibet. The Tsuglagkhang Temple Complex (the Dalai Lama's temple), Namgyal Monastery, Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts, and Library of Tibetan Works and Archives are the cultural institutions. The Tibetan Market and refugee craft workshops are the economic backbone.

Triund is a meadow at 2,850 metres on the lower slopes of the Dhauladhar range, 9 kilometres and approximately 3 hours of hiking from McLeod Ganj. The trail passes through oak and rhododendron forest, crossing boulder fields before reaching the open meadow. Views from Triund take in the full Dharamshala valley below and the Dhauladhar snowline directly above. Bir is a village 75 kilometres from Dharamshala; Billing is the launch site at 2,400 metres above it. The 14-kilometre flight from Billing to the landing zone at Bir offers one of the best thermal air columns in Asia-which is why the Paragliding World Cup has been hosted here. Tandem paragliding (with a professional pilot) requires no prior experience and takes 15-25 minutes.
