Guwahati sits on the south bank of the Brahmaputra at 55 metres above sea level, where the river is at its widest before it narrows into the gorge further east. During the Ambubachi Mela in June, an estimated 2.5 lakh devotees gather over four days. The views from the hill at dawn, with the Brahmaputra below, are among the most atmospheric in the city. "Kaziranga National Park, 200 kilometres east of Guwahati, holds approximately 2,400 Greater One-Horned Rhinoceroses: over two-thirds of the world's entire population.
