Delhi is India's enigmatic, vibrant and ancient city. Legend has it that the Djinns defended Delhi for so long, and live in the city's old monuments. The intriguing city was also the inspiration of various writers and painters. Today Delhi is the country's most happening city! The town was built by George V, Emperor of India during the 1911 Delhi Durbar, in 1911. The British architects Sir Edwin Lutyens and Sir Herbert Baker designed the town. It began serving its functions as the capital of the country in 1931, after being inaugurated by India's then Viceroy, Lord Irwin. Originally the walled town of Delhi had 14 gates out of which 5 are still intact. Ajmeri Gate: Ajmer in Rajasthan facing, Lahori Gate: Lahore in Pakistan facing, Kashmiri Gate: pointing north to Kashmir, Delhi Gate: road to Delhi's earlier settlements, and Turkman Gate: named after Saint Hazrat Shah Turkman's pious. Most residents chose to visit the area of interest by driving, by biking or by bus! There is nothing as de-stressing as riding around the glorious city and discovering New Delhi's center.
