Delhi, the capital of India, is a bustling metropolis with a rich historical and cultural heritage. The city has something to offer everyone, from the chaos of Old Delhi to the more sedate New Delhi. For first-time visitors, Delhi can be overwhelming. But with a little planning and some insider tips, you can make the most of your trip.

As a single woman, I was a bit apprehensive about visiting Delhi. But I needn't have been. I found the city to be lively and vibrant, with a lot to see and do. You can follow the itinerary for enjoying Delhi as a solo female traveller.

  • Cycle and Walking Tour Of Delhi

  • Qutub Minar Complex Tour with shopping at Sarojini Nagar

Day 1

Cycle and Walking Tour Of Delhi

It was a beautiful morning as I walked down the Rajpath. The sun was shining and the birds were singing. I took a deep breath in and felt the freshness of the air fill my lungs. I was on my way to meet the group for a Cycle Raj Tour of Delhi.

I cycled along the Rajpath and took in the sights of Parliament and the India Gate. I then made my way to Chandni Chowk for a shopping spree. I had never seen so many people in one place! The market was a sight, smells and sounds. I bought some spices and fabric for a new dress. I made a few fellow travellers and decided to accompany them for a meal. We went for breakfast at the Paranthe Wali Gali in Chandni Chowk. The food was delicious and unique and at the same time too heavy! I could not believe how much I was able to eat! After breakfast, we walked around some of Old Delhi's heritage structures. The Jama Masjid was breathtaking. We also saw the Havelis of Begum Samru, Mirza Ghalib and Zeenat Mahal. Next, we visited the Gurudwara Sis Ganj Sahib Ji and then took a short walk to the Red Fort. I learned so much about the rich history of Delhi. We ended our day with a shopping spree at Connaught Place and a delicious BBQ buffet at GT Road.

After having dinner, I took a cab to my hotel. Being in Delhi alone can be scary and unsafe so always remember to avoid travelling alone, especially at night. If you must travel alone, try to take a taxi or auto-rickshaw rather than walking. And, if possible, use a registered taxi service rather than hailing a taxi on the street. The best thing to do is to book tours which are guided and let you travel without worrying about the hassle of public transport.

Day 2

Qutub Minar Complex Tour and shop at Sarojini Nagar

For today, I booked a full-day cab, to show me around. You can get a cab for 12 hours for Rs 2000 – 3000. So I quickly finished up my breakfast and left for the Qutub Minar Complex- one of the most well-preserved monuments out there. I marvel at the intricate carvings on the walls and the way the sunlight hits the sandstone, making it glow in a warm, orange hue. After spending some time there, I head over to the Lotus Temple, which is said to be one of the most beautiful temples in Delhi. I'm not disappointed. The white marble glistens in the sun, and the lotus-shaped design is truly breathtaking. Next on the itinerary is Humayun's tomb, which is one of the best-preserved Mughal monuments. I'm impressed by the symmetry of the design and the beautiful gardens surrounding the tomb.

My next stop was Lodhi Garden. After exploring one of the most beautiful gardens in Delhi, I head over to the Sarojini Nagar market. I find some great bargains on clothing and accessories, and I even snag a few souvenirs for my friends and family back home. From there I left for the airport. All in all, it's been a great day exploring some of the most beautiful and historical places in Delhi. I can't wait to come here again.
